City Water Main Break Floods Saint Peter’s Church

Dear Friends of Nevelson Chapel,

It is with sadness that we must inform you of a significant water main break that has affected Saint Peter's Church, which houses Nevelson Chapel. Nevelson Chapel and street level offices have not been affected by this event. A city water main located under the plaza shared by Saint Peter's, the Citigroup Center, and the subway entrance at the corner of 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue broke over the weekend, causing significant flooding in the sanctuary and basement level.

The water main has been shut off and crews are working even now to remove water from the affected areas. The church is working with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, ConEdison, and the management of Boston Properties to assess the extent of the flood damage to the church. We will update you on this situation as we are able.

In this time of so many challenges, we realize this is distressing news for everyone who knows and loves this unique space. As we await an assessment of the damage and the extent of repairs that will be needed, we are grateful for our resilient community. We know that unexpected trials always bring out the best in our community, and we will move forward with hope and perseverance.
